Riddled with many grammar and spelling errors, this book is both predictable and has endless plotholes. The motivations of the characters within this book are questionable or not believable.

This story had so much potential, but a lot of the writing seems lazy, as in, the author was more interested in getting from one point to the next than she was in adding depth to the story. Where the tale could have been enriched with more detail or explanation, it is simply the writing equivalent of a hand wave of dismissal. This lack of care can be seen in the many grammar and spelling errors all throughout the book.

As mentioned, there was so much potential, and I believe that if the author had cared enough to hire an experienced editor/proofreader, the more regrettable parts of the book could have been corrected.

Armed in Her Fashion Kate Heartfield 9781771484527 Books Reviews

This book is probably my favorite new find of the year. What's not to love about a bunch of disgruntled women raiding Hell in 14th century Flanders? All the characters were well rounded, flawed, and likable, the prose was excellent, the historical background well placed, and the humor sufficiently dark. I only realized at the end that the whole thing was inspired by a Bruegel painting, and then I was even more impressed, because the book managed to bring the exact same dark-grotesque-humorous feel that the image has. I would have loved to read more, but I also was happy to see a story that was complete and well paced (I was just sad to let the characters go so soon). It was a great read all around, unique, excellently done, and likable.
THIS is how you do historical fantasy.
Book is good! Would recommend! But there are some pretty egregious printing errors in the 1st edition paperback (page 161 is just... missing) so I'd get an ebook or wait for an updated edition.
Lots of interesting characters and I loved all of the detail in the medieval setting and the depictions of the chimeras.
Heartfield delivers with a technically brilliant, challenging read. While I found this novel hard to read, particularly in regard to Magriet's ultimate fate, the novel is sound, artfully crafted, and recasts many modern tropes of fantastic fiction in the light of a medieval historical context. Lest you think that sounds typical, I mean a more realistic middle ages. The book is reminiscent of Hild by Nicola Griffiths, but much, much darker. If you are a fan of cerebral horror, this is a good choice for you.
