In this novel, Harry Dresden is the only Wizard in the Chicago Yellow Pages. He seems to be unable to restrain his mouth at the bad guys, but is a sucker for kids and some women.

Bob is Harry's supernatural advisor. He lives in a skull and avidly likes nude women.

Prescott Tremaine is a Deputy in Boone Mill, Missouri. Pres is the only fulltime Deputy in the town.

Ambre Marie LaChaise is Pres' girlfriend. She is a student at the local community college.

The Talbots are an influential family in Boone Mill. The oldest is Joseph Talbot. He has four nieces and nephews.

Cedar is the Mayor of the town. She is an older woman with an air of confidence.

Dagget is the Sheriff of the town. He gets along by getting along.

Griswald is the town gravedigger. He lives in the cemetery.

In this story, during World War I, a Talbot served in Egypt as a Major in the British Army. One day he tried to push aroung some locals and got cursed for his offenses. The Talbots started dying from the curse. Some now live in Boone Mill.

In the current era, Harry is underwater being drowned by some kind of monster. The creature is man-shaped, but quite comfortable in the lake. Harry finally just shoots the thing and escapes. Then he spends several hours searching for the creature.

All that water left Harry with a cold or the flu. By the time he gets to his office, he is hacking and sneezing. Harry discovers Pres waiting for him outside the office.

Pres presents Harry with pictures of two messy killings. Pres thinks certain of the wounds are from animals, but others are not. Both of the victims are Talbots.

Pres hires Harry to investigate the killings and to protect the survivors. Harry meets him later in Boone Mill. Pres introduces Harry to Dagget. Then Harry reads the case files and consults Bob.

The next day, Harry fixes wards around the cemetery. Any supernatural creature will be obvious within the area. Then the people start arriving.

Pres points out the Talbots and the Mayor. Harry asks him to check for unknown persons in the cemetery. Pres points out Griswald.

When Harry confronts Griswald, his sight shows a goblin. The creature is also very agile and avoids Harry's blasts with his staff. Pres tries to arrest the goblin, but only warns the creature to avoid his shots.

The goblin gets away. Dagget is very angry at Pres and Dresden. He has only seen the illusion instead of the true monster.

This tale also introduces Harry to a Ghoul. The two monsters seem to be having a feud. Yet both are trying to kill Talbots.

Harry also learns that the Mayor has a secret. She has been hiding it for years. The danger to the Talbot children cause her to reveal it to Harry.

Harry is overmatched in this story. The next installment in this sequence has not yet been announced on Amazon, but should be a graphic novel version of Grave Peril.

Highly recommended for Butcher fans and for anyone else who enjoys tales of supernatural creatures, heroic deputies, and courageous females. Read and enjoy!

The Magic Ball. Unless this is one of Harry’s very first cases, the flaws of his approach were too novice for his Wizardness. Three deaths in one case ! Never perfect, (he is human, after all,) there are too many blunders to accept.
One wonders as well if two different people wrote the last four thought bubbles frames of the story Harry leaves the reader with the dharmic coin of hope/fear. Thinking the two youngest Talbot’s have a chance to live on sans curse. However, the commentary at the last paragraph of the summary leaves Griswald the last word which is absolute sans hope and totally fearful implying that the curse remains in place unscathed.
Is it yes or is it no?
I love comics. I have since I was a kid. This is an ok graphic novel. I wanted to give it a 2 1/2 stars because it's not that I don't like it, it's just that I don't think the story rises to the level of "it's ok" but the graphics are definitely cool!

The entire store feels like Dresden is just a spectator, with no powers; because everyone else but Dresden controls the action, and resolves the issues. It's like he's just looking around caught in a vortex of something else happening.

If the story was more Dresden'esque I would have liked it.
My wife and I both felt that this was a disappointment. It is not bad in and of itself, but the bar seems to be set rather high for the Dresden Files universe, and this did not clear it. The art was ok, but the story, structure and pacing were rather underwhelming. If you are determined to possess all things Harry Dresden, then by all means pick it up. However, Ghoul Goblin adds nothing to the overall Dresden Files story, so someone on the fence could very well skip it entirely and not miss a beat.
I love the Dresden File books but I found this graphic novel a bit disappointing. The dialogue just didn't transfer well and I'm not quite sure why and ever more oddly, it was kind of spotty. Sometimes it was just like the books and very recognizable as Harry, but then other times it was like some impostor Harry imitator popped up to say a few lines but then disappeared. Very disorienting. I'll stick with the books.
In looking at this book what you're getting is essentially a graphic novel of a Dresden Files short story. I'm not sure I'd choose this as your first adventure into the Dresden Files, but the story line does occur shortly after the second book in the series. Don't look for deep character development here - there's an assumption that you've already got that from the books. This is just a fun little adventure that Harry runs into as part of the life, put to some artwork that does a fair job of going with Jim Butcher's descriptions (though the Blue Beetle may have a bit too much blue). The one star I docked was due to not living up to a full Dresden Files novel, but it was doomed to that by the brevity of the graphic novel.
This was disappointing. The story wasn't boring or anything, but it didn't have any of the humor and wit that I expect from Dresden books. It really looks as if Jim Butcher came up with the idea for the story and then the other guy actually wrote it. If you're hoping for Dresden's quips and snark, there's none of it here.

Story-wise, I found the magic and plot to be kind of confusing in this one. I couldn't see why Harry would have been punished for protecting humans because of the Unseelie Accords, when in the novels protecting humans from supernatural threats is what he does, regardless of why those supernatural baddies are attacking the humans. So the personal danger to Harry didn't make much sense to me. And it was interesting that in the back there's the original summary (or something) which has an entirely different ending and didn't include one of the main characters at all. So maybe that's partly why the plot didn't gel for me.

As far as the art, it wasn't bad, but I didn't particularly like it either. The artist has a tendency to draw men's chins way too big in my opinion.
