I got this book because one day, there was a notification on my Facebook wall about a free book and I am almost always incapable of turning a free book down. There was really nothing about the book summary that made me think I'd fall in love.

I didn't fall in love. This isn't a book that is made to be fantastic, a classic, something that tears at your heart. It's supposed to be a "reality" show in book form. It definitely fit that bill. Unfortunately, I don't watch reality shows and I'm not a huge fan of reality show books.

There's nothing really wrong with The Ivy It's just not my cup of tea. There wasn't really much character development or much of a plot. It was like taking a peek into the lives of a few Harvard freshmen as they try to tackle the academics and social areas of college.

The guys are written to be swoon-worthy, but I'm only feeling lukewarm on them. The outside may be impressive, but I'd like a bit more substance. You can only stare at a pretty face for so long before you start to get a little bored.

Don't get me wrong, I did enjoy the break from my usual type of books to read The Ivy, and I'll probably read at least the sequel the next time I'm looking for something quick to read. Just because this book isn't for me doesn't mean it's bad, in any way, shape, or form. It just means it's not for me. If you're a fan of the reality shows that just follow the lives of a group of people, or books like the Gossip Girl series, then you'll probably enjoy this book a lot more than I did.

I had a hard time believing the protagonist was smart enough to be at Harvard when she immediately began doing every stupid thing a girl can do as a college freshman. It would have been more like a high schooler to behave like this, and I know some college girls do some pretty dumb stuff. I get aggravated when smart girls in books are this stupid about guys. It's highly predictable. It's not funny. It's annoying.
I was really excited about this book and I was not disappointed! This book is addictive and while reading the pages seemed to turn themselves. It was fun to get in the head of an attractive but down-to-earth girl with men and friend troubles around every corner. The characters seem very real and the plot is very believable. At first glance I thought the plot would become predictable but there are some curve balls. Definitely ready for book two. Bring it on Kunze and Onur! I want to see how Callie gets herself out of this one.

OK I am in my early 40's (hurts to admit) and I LOVED this book. I've already read the second in the series and now am going to start on the 3rd. totally addictive book that really sucks you in and leaves you wanting to read the next installment in the series. Kinda chick-lit-esque but also written by two really intelligent (Harvard grads themselves) women. yes, the plot is dishy and soapy but I loved the details about Harvard clubs, the competitive and elite atmosphere, as well as the who will she choose plot and all the soap-worthy misunderstandings. really loved it. recommend to anyone wanting a fun read.
I was actually enjoying the Bridget Jones wannabe, The Ivy, by Lauren Kunze, until I reached what I thought was the end of a chapter but was the end of the book.
It's not fair to do that to your readers. Did you forget to include the 2nd half of the novel? Did you run out of ideas for Callie, the every popular, cliche'd California girl? Was there only so much alcohol and drugs that Mimi, the international slut, could do without killing herself? And what about Dana, the so prudish she must belong to a cult, virgin, sleeping with Adam? Were they really just sleeping? Did you make too much of Alexis and her revenge motive with Vanessa against Callie? Wasn't Clint really just too perfect? Perhaps you forgot to show his potential for ax murderer because we women know there are no men who are THAT perfect.
Don't worry about spoilers because this book was all foreplay and no climax.
I don't know about any of you, or if any of you are old enough to have done the college thing, or if you just chose not to....but reading Lauren Kunze's debut novel will make you reminisce about the times that you had in college or dream of the possibilities to come! Or maybe even make you think about the things you could have missed, but don't worry. Not only does Kunze take you inside a group of friends that could easily represent those that any of us had.

There's always the "Callie", who is smart, charismatic, and for some reason always gets a ton of attention. There's always the "Vanessa", who manages to try to hard to get what they want and ends up alienating themselves in the process. There's always the resident drunk or party girl like Mimi, and yes, there is always a girl who just doesn't quite fit in---and yet still does, like Dana. Kunze was able to create these lovely characters that really took quite a hold on my emotions and I kept rooting for each one to grow and learn from these mistakes. Because let's face it, all of us make mistakes in college.

I really would love to know if Kunze had a direct relationship with either of the Harvard publications that she writes about in this novel, and the amount of pressure that comes along with signing up and vying for a position on them. It creates a lot of tension for the main character and her friend Matt, and introduces the main villain (or Evil Queen) of the story Alexis Thorndike. She takes a more prominent role in the sequel, but she is the "author" of many articles that Callie reads throughout this novel.

That leads me to the next thing I loved about this novel the narrative structure. Not only did Alexis' articles that were included in the novel help the reader know when and what was going on around the Harvard campus when Callie was busy with her drama, but it provided some comedic relief and a different point of view and writing style for a few moments throughout the book.

Overall, I have to admit that I read this novel in one sitting and I absolutely loved it. I have read comparisons of this novel to that of Gossip Girl, but I think that The Ivy is much more entertaining.

Just remember, that even though this novel is categorized as Young Adult, that there are some adult themes dealing with sex and drugs in the narrative.
