Empire of the Sikhs The Life and Times of Maharaja Ranjit Singh Patwant Singh Jyoti M Rai Books
There aren't too many books available that provide a balanced, thoughtful and objective viewpoint on Ranjit Singh, but this book thankfully meets all those marks. Everything is supported with notes and references, providing much insight that I wasn't aware of previously. It's a thoughtful read on his accomplishments and shortcomings. It's important to have such a book finally written on Ranjit Singh because he was such a significant figure in Sikh history. It seems much of his stunning deeds have been forgotten, which is a shame considering what he means to the Sikh people during his time and even now. This book will help new generations understand fully what he did for Sikhism and the tremendous legacy he created, not through brute force or submission as most leaders of his time, but through an open mind and understanding, reflecting the foundations of Sikhism in practice.
Patwant Singh has written many excellent books on Sikh history and this was his last, passing away not too long ago. A tremendous achievement for a tremendous leader.

Empire of the Sikhs The Life and Times of Maharaja Ranjit Singh Patwant Singh Jyoti M Rai Books Reviews
A summary of the review on StrategyPage.Com
'Ranjit Singh (1780-1839) founded the Sikh Empire in 1799, which lasted for about a decade after his death, when it fell to the British Raj. Despite his importance in the history of India, he is largely unknown outside his homeland. Empire of the Sikhs, written by well-known scholar of Indian history Patwant Singh, author of Of Dreams and Demons, An Indian Memoir among other works, and journalist Rai, is the first proper biography in English of this interesting ruler and soldier. Given that most Westerners know little about India, the authors wisely begin in the fifteenth century with an overview of the early history of Sikhism. They then pick up the story of Ranjit Singh. After a chapter on his early life, we get a look at his rise to the leadership of the Sikhs and his multiple campaigns to build and consolidate an empire in a region caught between rival powers and contending religions. The chapters that follow deal with Singh's zest for life and pleasure, his patronage of the arts, and the evolving nature of his rule. The book concludes with an account of the decline of the empire after his death and its ultimate annexation by the British. Although the authors are rather too fond of Singh (a fault often found in books about conquerors, such as Sing's contemporary Napoleon), this book will certainly be of value to anyone interested in the history of India.'
